As part of Work Package 2 for PROMAR, a waste and recycling bin system was installed at the pilot site at Long Bay Beach, Beef Island, on 20 January 2026, with signs installed and a small training session with beach vendors taking place on 9 February 2026.

On 13 March, after a month of the bin system being utilized at the beach, the Green VI team spent the day gaining insights from local beach vendors, beach wardens, and visiting tourists to understand how the bins were being used and how the system was working for beach users.

Feedback highlighted that the frequency of bin clearing and the bin size were not suitable for the volume of waste coming through the system. However, since the bins were deployed, there is visibly less litter on the beach and beach wardens spend less time collecting litter. For the most part, beach goers are using the bins correctly and separating materials as intended.

After speaking with vendors and beach wardens, the team conducted Knowledge, Attitudes and Practices (KAP) surveys with tourists, exploring their impressions of litter in the British Virgin Islands (BVI) and whether they had noticed the system. Twenty surveys were completed, and one tourist even volunteered to take part in an awareness campaign on how to best use the beach bins!
