PROMAR Project Strengthens Local Capacity to Tackle Marine Litter in Guyana
University of Guyana Hosts Hands-On Workshop on Riverine Litter Monitoring
The PROMAR Project, Prevention of Marine Litter in the Caribbean Sea, successfully concluded a two-day capacity building workshop at the University of Guyana, Turkeyen Campus, on 25–26 November 2025. The event brought together students, environmental practitioners, and regulators to equip them with practical tools to monitor and intercept land-based marine litter before it reaches the ocean.
Facilitated by Mr Seon Hamer (expert in environmental and climate change) and Professor Temitope Oyedotun (specialist in geospatial and water systems analysis), the workshop centred on PROMAR’s Source-to-Sea Flow Analysis approach. Participants engaged in sessions covering strategic site selection, construction of floating boom traps, standardised data collection using digital tools, and translating findings into policy briefs.
A key highlight was the development of locally adaptable methodologies for Guyana’s unique coastal-plain aquatic environments. The workshop underscored the power of citizen science in generating credible, actionable data to inform waste management and marine conservation efforts.
“The solutions to marine litter must be rooted in local knowledge and sustained by local action,” said Mr Hamer. “This workshop is a step toward a cleaner Caribbean, one river at a time.”
