On 22 May 2026, PROMAR Guyana, implemented by the University of Guyana and Caribbean Youth Environment Network (CYEN) Guyana, visited Mae's School in Georgetown to deliver a marine litter awareness session for 96 students.

The session was organised following a request from Grade 6 teacher Ms Orpha Jewie Reddy, who had seen the positive impact of previous PROMAR activities and wanted her students to have the same opportunity to learn about protecting the environment. As part of Output IV: Stakeholder Awareness and Dissemination Activities, the visit formed part of the project's wider efforts to build environmental awareness among young people across Guyana.

Through interactive presentations and discussions, students learned why healthy oceans are important, what marine litter is, where it comes from, and the effects it has on wildlife, people and coastal communities. They also explored simple actions they can take in their everyday lives to reduce plastic waste and help keep Guyana's rivers and coastlines clean.

The agenda included a welcome and introduction to the PROMAR Project, an overview of why healthy oceans matter, an exploration of marine litter and its sources, a look at how everyday choices affect the environment, practical ways to reduce plastic waste, and an interactive discussion and question and answer session, before closing remarks brought the visit to an end.

Students actively participated throughout, asking questions and sharing their ideas, demonstrating a strong interest in protecting the environment. The session helped students gain a better understanding of marine litter and its impacts, while encouraging them to identify everyday actions they can take to reduce plastic pollution. The discussions also strengthened environmental awareness among students and encouraged them to think of themselves as advocates for cleaner communities and healthier oceans.

By working with schools such as Mae's School, the PROMAR Project in Guyana is helping to equip the next generation with the knowledge and motivation needed to care for Guyana's coastal and marine ecosystems, ensuring that even small actions today can lead to a cleaner, healthier future for the country's rivers and coastlines.
