person sampling beach litter
WP 1
In work package I, research was conducted to establish knowledge about the initial context regarding solid waste and marine litter in the project countries Costa Rica, Dominican Republic and Colombia. These studies comprised the analysis of plastic waste leakage from land-based sources and the sampling of solid beach litter in several municipalities in the Caribbean.
WP 2
Work Package 2 focuses on implementing practical pilot solutions that demonstrate sustainable local actions to reduce marine litter and promote a circular economy in the Caribbean. These country-specific pilots serve as both proof-of-concept and scalable models.
In Colombia, the Santa Marta pilot supports plastic collection and recycling with recyclers' associations and includes an EPR guideline for municipalities. In the Dominican Republic, a River Boom Waste Barrier and a plastic recycling network were set up, alongside support for international treaty negotiations.
Costa Rica introduced municipal solid waste plans and circular economy strategies targeting the plastics sector.
These pilots are supported by BlueBox, a key outreach and learning tool offering guidelines, tutorials, and best practices. Together with beach clean-ups and training programs, these actions feed into regional strategies and policy improvements.
Plastic Waste
WP 3
Work Package 3 strengthens regional and national policy frameworks through inclusive dialogue and technical support. It provides tools like EPR guidelines, case studies, and technical papers (e.g., on foam packaging and ISO standards) to assist governments and stakeholders in aligning with circular economy goals and international treaties. These resources form the knowledge base for informed, collaborative policymaking across the Caribbean.

WP 4
Work Package 4 focuses on engaging the public and key stakeholders through awareness campaigns that promote behavioral change and support marine litter reduction. Activities include beach clean-ups, EPR trainings, and outreach using the PROMAR Compendium: a collection of tools, stories, and media resources designed to spread knowledge and inspire action across the Caribbean.
