Inception Meeting and Stakeholder Consultation- Trinidad & Tobago
Trinidad and Tobago Launches PROMAR Project to Tackle Marine Plastic Pollution
April 23, 2025 – Institute of Marine Affairs Auditorium, Trinidad and Tobago
In a significant move to combat marine plastic pollution in the Caribbean, Trinidad and Tobago hosted the official launch of the Prevention of Marine Litter in the Caribbean Sea (PROMAR) Project with an Inception Meeting and Stakeholder Consultation. Held in a hybrid format at the Institute of Marine Affairs (IMA) Auditorium, the event brought together over 30 engaged participants, signaling strong national and regional interest in marine environmental protection.
A Collaborative Start Toward Cleaner Waters
The session provided a comprehensive overview of the PROMAR Project, highlighting its core objectives and implementation strategy for Trinidad and Tobago. Participants explored the successful outcomes of Phase 1, setting the stage for more impactful actions in Phase 2.
The day’s agenda also featured:
Work Package 1: A deep dive into the site selection and monitoring framework
A spotlight on the GEF Small Grants Programme Maraval River Plastic Extraction Project
An open stakeholder discussion that facilitated knowledge exchange, community input, and collaboration
Demonstration Sites Selected: Foreshore Beach and Maraval River
As a key outcome of the stakeholder consultation, two demonstration sites were officially selected: Foreshore Beach and the Maraval River. These sites were identified as critical areas for intervention due to their vulnerability to plastic pollution and their potential for impactful restoration.
Sampling activities at these sites are set to begin soon, marking the first steps in a series of data-driven efforts to understand and mitigate marine litter in Trinidad and Tobago.
Looking Ahead
The PROMAR Project’s launch in Trinidad and Tobago marks a promising start in the national journey toward a cleaner marine environment and supports broader regional efforts to “End Plastic Pollution.” As implementation progresses, stakeholders and the public can expect continued updates on project milestones, community engagement efforts, and success stories.
Stay tuned for more progress as PROMAR continues to protect the Caribbean Sea—one shoreline at a time. 🌊
