A Poster and Craft Competition entitled "Small Actions – Big Impact, Protect our Sea from Plastic Pollution" was launched at primary schools in north-west Trinidad, following PROMAR outreach activities in May 2026. As part of the Prevention of Marine Litter in the Caribbean Sea (PROMAR) Project, Standard Three students (ages 7 to 9) had the opportunity to take part and demonstrate what they had learned about plastic pollution and marine litter prevention.

The Poster Competition invited students to prepare posters showcasing a clear, positive action that helps protect the ocean and waterways from plastic pollution, with points awarded for theme and message, neatness and effort, clarity, and creativity. The Craft Competition challenged students to create a marine-themed craft item using recycled or reused materials, such as plastic bottles or caps, cardboard boxes, paper rolls, old newspapers and fabric scraps, with points awarded for the use of recycled materials, theme and idea, effort and construction, and creativity.

The competition closed in June 2026, with entries received from two schools: La Seiva R.C. School and Woodbrook Presbyterian Primary School. Judging of the art pieces took place on 26 June 2026, carried out by the PROMAR team alongside local visual artist and cultural practitioner Karl Doyle, who brought valuable creative insight to the judging process.

Prize distribution ceremonies were held at both La Seiva R.C. School and Woodbrook Presbyterian Primary School on 1 July 2026. Students placing in the top three of the Poster and Craft Competitions were awarded prizes from Five Islands, Chuck E Cheese or Movietowne. Prizes were also awarded to students for their participation, as well as to teachers who achieved high participation rates within their classes, recognising the collective effort behind the competition's success.

The PROMAR Team extends its congratulations to all winners!

Through creative, hands-on initiatives like the Poster and Craft Competition, PROMAR continues to engage young people across Trinidad and Tobago in the fight against plastic pollution, helping to build environmental awareness, encourage responsible waste management, and inspire the next generation of ocean advocates to protect the region's marine and coastal ecosystems.
