Celebrating Ocean Week in Suriname: Green Heritage Fund Leads a Week of Impactful Activities

From June 7–11, 2025, the PROMAR local team in Suriname, Green Heritage Fund Suriname (GHFS), hosted a week-long series of events in recognition of Ocean Week. These activities brought communities together to raise awareness about the importance of protecting our oceans and tackling plastic pollution.

The week began with a major cleanup campaign at Leonsberg, where dozens of volunteers joined forces to remove litter from coastal areas as part of the PROMAR project’s ongoing efforts to reduce marine waste.

Engaging Activities for All Ages

Following the cleanup, GHFS hosted a movie night attended by over 150 participants, sparking conversations about ocean conservation and sustainable living. An educational boat trip on the Suriname River gave participants a closer look at the region’s rich marine biodiversity, including dolphins and sea turtles, while a series of webinars and conferences opened dialogue on the future of our oceans.

A Regional Conversation on Plastic Pollution

A highlight of Ocean Week was the online discussion, “One Sea, Many Shores: Caribbean Voices on Plastic Pollution,” co-hosted with BGP Offshore on June 8. This virtual event brought together PROMAR experts from the Dominican Republic, Costa Rica, and Colombia, alongside local Surinamese specialists. Participants shared regional perspectives and solutions to tackle ocean plastic pollution, emphasizing the importance of collaboration across borders to protect the Caribbean Sea and beyond.

Building Momentum for Ocean Protection

The week’s activities demonstrated the power of community involvement and international cooperation in addressing ocean challenges. Green Heritage Fund Suriname and PROMAR continue to work towards innovative, community-driven solutions for marine litter prevention and ocean health.
