PROMAR Project Inspires Environmental Awareness and Career Opportunities at UG’s 2025 Open Day and Job Fair
The Guyana PROMAR Project proudly showcased its work in marine conservation and plastic pollution reduction during the University of Guyana’s (UG) 2025 Open Day and Job Fair, held March 7–8 at the Turkeyen Campus. This year’s event, themed “Explore, Connect, Evolve”, attracted students, alumni, industry leaders, and employers from across the nation for two days of career development, networking, and innovation.
In collaboration with the Faculty of Earth and Environmental Sciences, the PROMAR Project hosted an interactive booth focused on combating plastic pollution and protecting Guyana’s marine and coastal ecosystems. Visitors were introduced to the project’s goals and engaged in hands-on learning activities highlighting the environmental and socioeconomic threats posed by marine litter.
“As students and young professionals prepare for their future, it’s critical they understand the role they can play in building a more sustainable planet,” said Professor Temitope Oyedotun, Guyana PROMAR Project Team Lead. “This event offered a unique platform not only to inspire future environmental leaders but also to build public awareness about plastic pollution and sustainable practices.”
The PROMAR booth drew significant interest from university students, alumni, and even secondary school pupils eager to learn about sustainability careers and practical steps to reduce single-use plastics. Attendees engaged in lively discussions on sustainable development and explored career paths in environmental science and related fields.
The two-day Open Day and Job Fair also featured dozens of organizations across diverse sectors, offering internships, employment opportunities, and collaborative partnerships with UG students and graduates. PROMAR’s participation emphasized the importance of integrating environmental awareness into Guyana’s national development agenda.
By taking part in this flagship event, the Guyana PROMAR Project reaffirmed its commitment to community engagement, youth empowerment, and the fight against marine plastic pollution—ensuring the next generation is equipped to create a sustainable future.
