On Saturday, 8 August 2026, the Institute of Marine Affairs (IMA), under the Prevention of Marine Litter in the Caribbean Sea (PROMAR) Project, joined the Ministry of Planning, Economic Affairs and Development (MPEAD) Hive Five Spellbound Caravan at East Gates Mall, Trincity. Hosted by Guardian Media Limited (GML), the event brought together representatives from CARIRI, the Environmental Management Authority (EMA), and other stakeholders for a day filled with activities, challenges, and community engagement.

 

The event offered a valuable opportunity for the PROMAR team to connect with children, parents, and members of the public while raising awareness of the project's efforts to reduce single-use plastics and prevent marine litter across Trinidad and Tobago. In total, 198 people were engaged throughout the day, reflecting strong public interest in ocean conservation and environmental awareness.

 

The PROMAR team brought its message to life through a range of fun, interactive, and educational activities designed to appeal to visitors of all ages. Attendees tested their knowledge on marine pollution, ocean life, biodiversity, and other ocean-related topics, while others took on the challenge of completing a 24-piece puzzle in under two and a half minutes. Alongside the games, participants took part in meaningful discussions about the harmful impacts of single-use plastics, practical steps individuals can take to help reduce plastic pollution in Trinidad and Tobago, and the importance of transitioning toward a more circular economy. Tokens were presented to everyone who took part, adding a fun incentive to the day's learning.

 

The activities generated enthusiastic participation throughout the event, creating meaningful opportunities for the PROMAR team to engage directly with the public, answer questions, and share information about the project's ongoing work to combat marine litter and plastic pollution.

 

By taking part in community-focused events like the Hive Five Spellbound Caravan, PROMAR Trinidad and Tobago continues to expand its public outreach, using interactive and accessible activities to build awareness of marine litter prevention and encourage practical, everyday actions that support a cleaner, more sustainable environment for coastal and marine ecosystems across the country.
