On Monday, August 17, 2026, the Preventing Marine Litter in the Caribbean Sea (PROMAR) Project took part in the Nevis Music Academy Summer Camp, Vibe & Valor: The SKN Creative Forge, at the Jessups Community Center in Nevis. The session gave 15 children between the ages of 6 and 16 an interactive introduction to plastic pollution, its environmental impacts, and the national and regional efforts underway to address plastic waste in St. Kitts and Nevis.
With such a wide age range, the presentation was kept simple and interactive so that younger and older campers could follow the key messages and join the discussion. Facilitated by Ruvidson Morton and Lynelle Morton, the session began with an introduction to plastics, including how widely they are used and the problems that arise when plastic waste is poorly managed. Campers then learned about the dangers of plastic pollution, particularly its effects on the environment and marine ecosystems.
A key focus was the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis' Single-Use Plastic Ban. Campers received an overview of why the ban was considered necessary and how reducing dependence on unnecessary single-use plastic products can lead to cleaner communities and a healthier marine environment.
Participants were also introduced to environmental projects currently supporting plastic waste management in the Federation, with particular attention given to the PROMAR Project and the Closing the Caribbean Plastic Tap Project. This helped young people see that national policy, regional partnerships, and community action all contribute to reducing marine litter.
The session closed with a discussion on practical actions children can take to reduce plastic pollution, followed by questions, a recap of the key environmental messages, and a group photo. Campers were encouraged to make environmentally responsible choices, cut back on unnecessary single-use plastics, dispose of waste properly, and share what they learned with their families and communities.
By bringing marine litter prevention to creative spaces like the Nevis Music Academy Summer Camp, PROMAR St. Kitts and Nevis continues to build environmental awareness among young people and nurture the next generation of ocean protectors. Initiatives like this support PROMAR's wider goals of reducing plastic pollution, encouraging behavioral change, and protecting the coastal and marine ecosystems of St. Kitts and Nevis.
