Environmental Progress in the British Virgin Islands: GreenVI Launches PROMAR with Beach Sampling Activity
Beef Island, British Virgin Islands – March 31, 2025
In a powerful step toward environmental protection and sustainable coastal management, GreenVI officially launched the first round of beach sampling activities under the PROMAR (Prevention of Marine Litter in the Caribbean Sea) Project at Long Bay Beach, Beef Island, one of their demonstration sites. This initiative marks a major milestone in the British Virgin Islands’ (BVI) ongoing commitment to tackling marine pollution and safeguarding its precious marine ecosystems.
The initial data from the Long Bay Beach sampling revealed that nearly 50% of the waste collected was composed of consumer product-related plastics, with an additional 6.3% attributed to every day-use plastic. These findings underscore the urgent need for focused action to reduce marine litter and improve waste management practices in the territory.
Throughout the month of April, the GreenVI team expanded their efforts, conducting comprehensive sampling at various coastal sites — including well-known tourist beaches and beloved local BBQ hangouts. This broad approach is designed to capture a diverse and accurate picture of the litter landscape across the demonstration sites.
By establishing this data baseline, the PROMAR project in the BVI is laying the foundation for targeted, evidence-based beach interventions. These future actions will help reduce plastic pollution, enhance public awareness, and contribute to long-term environmental resilience in the region.
This initiative is more than just data collection; it is a critical step toward a cleaner, more sustainable future for the British Virgin Islands. As the PROMAR project continues, local communities, visitors, and environmental advocates are encouraged to support and participate in ongoing efforts to protect the beauty and biodiversity of the BVI’s coastlines.
💙 Let’s keep the momentum going — together, we can build healthier oceans and a thriving future for all.
