Measuring Marine Litter Awareness Across Borders: A Regional Snapshot of Progress 🌊

In the ongoing fight against marine litter, knowledge truly is power—and we're thrilled to share that power is growing across borders.

We’ve successfully completed and analysed the Knowledge, Attitude, and Practices (KAP) surveys in three key partner countries: Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, and Colombia. This vital research forms part of our regional strategy to better understand how communities perceive and respond to marine litter in their local environments.

The surveys, conducted both before and after project implementation, spanned three coastal communities in each country. While organizing and executing these field interviews presented logistical and cultural challenges, the results are more than worth it.

📈 A standout result: Knowledge of what marine litter is has increased by an impressive 70%!

This increase is not just a statistic—it represents a shift in community awareness and a critical first step toward behavioural change. Enhanced understanding means that more people now recognize marine litter not only as an environmental issue, but as a problem they can help solve through improved waste practices and advocacy.

The findings show that when communities are equipped with the right information and tools, they can become powerful allies in preserving marine ecosystems.

Let’s keep working together to protect our oceans—one informed community at a time.
