The Circular Economy Pilot in Guyana has reached a significant milestone with the successful procurement and installation of essential equipment for Component 3: Waste-to-Product Scheme, focused on converting plastic waste into value-added products.

Three pieces of equipment have been acquired and installed: a plastic shredder, a moulding machine, and a 3D printing machine. Together, they establish the operational foundation of the Plastic Souvenir Micro-Enterprise Unit, implemented under Guyana Circle – The Circular Economy Lab of Guyana.

From Procurement to Operational Readiness

With procurement and installation now complete, the project has successfully transitioned from planning to full operational readiness. Each machine plays a distinct role:

  • Plastic Shredder – processes collected plastic into reusable flakes.
  • Moulding Machine – converts shredded plastic into standardized, durable products.
  • 3D Printing Machine – enables innovative design, rapid prototyping, and customized production.

The installation phase included setup, calibration, and preliminary testing to ensure safe and efficient operation.

Enabling Waste-to-Product Innovation

The installed system supports a structured process: collected plastic waste is cleaned, shredded, and then moulded or 3D-printed into new products. Planned items include keychains, phone cases, coasters, decorative ornaments, and educational and STEM kits. Selected products will also be supplied to schools and the University, reinforcing sustainable procurement and internal circularity practices.

Capacity Building and Inclusive Enterprise Development

University students and support staff will be trained first in plastic recycling techniques, digital fabrication, product development, and micro-enterprise management. Through a cascading model, they will then train secondary school students, youth groups, women-led groups, and community members, ensuring long-term knowledge transfer and sustainability.

Advancing Guyana-PROMAR's Circular Economy

Component 3 represents a strategic investment in green innovation infrastructure, directly advancing plastic waste reduction, youth and student empowerment, community-based enterprise development, and sustainable production systems. By transforming plastic waste into marketable products, the Waste-to-Product Scheme demonstrates how environmental challenges can become economic opportunities within a circular economy framework.
