Guyana PROMAR Team Brings Marine Litter Education to Schools Across the Country
During February 2026, the Guyana-PROMAR Team carried out a series of educational activities in schools across the country, engaging students at different levels in topics related to marine litter and the protection of Guyana's coastal and wetland ecosystems. Students from Mon Repos Primary School, Lusignan Primary School, and Good Hope Secondary School took part in activities designed to introduce them to the concept of marine litter and its environmental impacts, while increasing their awareness of the importance of wetlands, oceans, and marine biodiversity.
At the two primary schools, Grade 1 students participated in storytelling and coloring sessions centered on marine animals and ocean life. Through these activities, students learned about wetlands, the importance of keeping their environment clean, and the harmful effects of litter on wildlife, helping to encourage responsible environmental habits such as proper waste disposal and reduced plastic use.
At Good Hope Secondary School, members of the Environmental Club engaged in discussions on the sources and impacts of marine litter and explored practical ways in which communities can contribute to reducing marine pollution. The sessions also aimed to foster environmental leadership among secondary school students, inspiring them to promote sustainable practices within their communities.
