PROMAR Brings Circular Economy Innovations to University of Guyana Open Day
On 17 and 18 April, PROMAR's team in Guyana participated in the University of Guyana 2026 Open Day & Job Fair, bringing together a diverse range of participants – including secondary school students, parents, teachers, and members of the wider public – for discussions and demonstrations centred on sustainability, recycling, and circular economy practices. Over 300 visitors stopped at PROMAR's stand across the two-day event.
At the Guyana-PROMAR exhibition stand, visitors explored the innovative products developed under the Circular Economy Lab from Workpackage 2. Created from recycled plastics, these items include key holders, tea cup saucers, and earrings, among other products. In total, over 150 recycled items were distributed to visitors to promote environmental responsibility and encourage participation in waste sorting initiatives.
Participants were guided through the full process of transforming clean plastic bottles into value-added goods, with facilitators highlighting both the environmental and economic benefits of recycling. Visitors also had the opportunity to ask questions on waste management and recycling practices before receiving a recycled item as a token – an approach designed to incentivize interactive learning.
A further highlight was a live demonstration of recycled bins designed specifically for waste sorting hubs, alongside displays of equipment procured through the project. The event also served as a platform to raise awareness of the PROMAR Project's ongoing implementation in Guyana, its objectives, and its contributions to reducing marine litter and promoting sustainable waste management.
The PROMAR Project remains committed to fostering innovation, building capacity, and supporting community-driven solutions to address marine waste challenges in Guyana and the wider Caribbean region.
