The PROMAR Project has gained national media attention in Guyana, with NCN Guyana covering the team's recent coastal clean-up at Novar Beach, Mahaicony.

Despite challenging weather conditions, volunteers under the PROMAR Project, led through the University of Guyana Faculty of Earth and Environmental Sciences, executed a full beach clean-up and marine litter sampling exercise at Novar Beach. They were joined by volunteers from the Caribbean Youth Environment Network (CYEN), the University of Guyana Geographical Society, and members of the Novar community.

In total, over 209 kg of litter was collected. The waste was predominantly linked to recreational activities and household disposal, with single-use containers, food packaging, beer bottles, cans and plastic bottles making up the majority of items recovered.

As NCN Guyana highlighted, with the rainy season approaching, many communities in Guyana are already experiencing flooded yards, clogged drains and water creeping into homes. Much of this is worsened by improper waste disposal: when garbage is left in open areas or waterways, rain carries it straight into trenches and rivers. Floodwaters mixed with waste bring disease into communities, contaminate water sources and create unsafe living conditions for families and children. At the same time, mangrove ecosystems are being choked by discarded waste.

The work carried out in Guyana by PROMAR and its partners is essential to changing this reality, and the feature on NCN Guyana is a recognition of that commitment!
