Baseline Cleanup at Vreedzaam Market Marks a Promising Start for PROMAR in Suriname

As part of the ongoing PROMAR (Prevention of Marine Litter in the Caribbean Sea) initiative, Green Heritage Fund Suriname has taken a significant step in strengthening local waste management through a successful baseline cleanup at the Vreedzaam Market—one of the project’s key demonstration sites.

On March 30, a team from Green Heritage Fund, joined by enthusiastic students from the Faculty of Technological Sciences (FTeW), came together to tackle plastic pollution on-site. Their collective efforts resulted in the removal of an impressive 275.34 kilograms of waste, laying the groundwork for future cleanups and long-term behavior change in the area.

This initiative is more than a one-day activity—it’s a critical part of building a data-driven approach to managing waste in Suriname. By starting with a baseline, the PROMAR project can measure progress over time, evaluate the effectiveness of interventions, and adapt strategies to ensure sustainable impact.

Cleanups like these not only reduce the immediate environmental burden but also raise awareness about the link between land-based waste and ocean pollution. Through partnerships with academic institutions and local communities, PROMAR fosters a culture of stewardship and responsibility for Suriname’s natural resources.

As we look ahead, these actions represent a firm commitment to ocean conservation and a cleaner, healthier environment for all. Stay tuned for more updates as PROMAR continues to make waves across Suriname and the Caribbean. 🌊🌱
