PROMAR at the Environmental Protection Agency’s Green Walk- Guyana

Content

In celebration of World Environment Day (WED), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) hosted its annual Green Walk, bringing together environmental advocates, youth, and members of the public under this year’s theme: “Ending Plastic Pollution.”

Among the standout features of the event was the active participation of the PROMAR Project, implemented through the University of Guyana with the support of the Caribbean Youth Environment Network (CYEN). With an ambitious goal to engage at least 50 individuals, the team exceeded expectations by connecting with 87 enthusiastic participants at the PROMAR booth.

The PROMAR booth used the opportunity to spotlight its mission of reducing marine litter and safeguarding Guyana’s waterways and coastal ecosystems. Attendees were treated to a series of interactive activities and brief, impactful awareness talks, designed to educate and inspire action. Topics ranged from the consequences of plastic pollution on marine life to practical, community-level solutions for sustainable waste management.

The engagement sparked meaningful dialogue, with many participants expressing a desire to take part in future PROMAR initiatives. This positive response underscores a growing awareness in Guyana about the importance of environmental stewardship and the collective responsibility to tackle plastic waste.

As World Environment Day continues to serve as a global call to action, events like the EPA Green Walk and initiatives like PROMAR are proving vital in fostering a culture of sustainability and empowering citizens to make a difference—one step at a time.
