CYEN Guyana Hosts Annual Scavenger Hunt to Raise Awareness on Plastic Pollution
Empowering Youth to Protect the Planet through Action and Education

Georgetown, Guyana – 7th June 2025 — In celebration of World Environment Day 2025, the Caribbean Youth Environment Network (CYEN) in Guyana, through the University of Guyana - PROMAR project and with support from local sponsors, successfully hosted its annual Scavenger Hunt under the global theme “Ending Plastic Pollution.”

The engaging event brought together 39 dynamic young people between the ages of 15 and 30, representing non-governmental organizations (NGOs), civil society organizations (CSOs), youth groups, and university-based environmental clubs. Through a series of interactive challenges and eco-themed activities, participants were not only encouraged to work collaboratively but also to deepen their understanding of the environmental impacts of plastic waste.

This year’s scavenger hunt went beyond fun and games—it was a platform for learning, leadership, and advocacy. Activities focused on the urgent need to reduce plastic pollution, highlighting its role in exacerbating the triple planetary crisis of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution. By exploring their communities and completing environmentally themed tasks, participants connected global environmental concerns with local action.

The initiative aligned with several key objectives:

  • Raising awareness of the dangers posed by plastic pollution to ecosystems and human health

  • Fostering partnerships between youth, public agencies, and private sector stakeholders

  • Promoting CYEN Guyana’s mission and the broader work of the PROMAR project in marine litter prevention

Through this youth-led approach, CYEN continues to build a network of informed and motivated environmental advocates who are prepared to take meaningful steps in combating plastic pollution. The scavenger hunt not only spotlighted the passion and creativity of Guyanese youth but also reinforced the power of education and collaboration in driving sustainable change.

As the world pushes toward a future free of plastic pollution, initiatives like CYEN’s scavenger hunt serve as a powerful reminder that young people are key to solving the planet’s most pressing environmental challenges.
