PROMAR Beach Clean-Up Removes Nearly 45 kg of Waste from Conaree Beach, St. Kitts and Nevis
On 18 April 2026, the PROMAR Team in St. Kitts and Nevis carried out a Beach Clean-Up and Data Sampling Exercise at Conaree Beach. Using the PROMAR recording tool, the 13 participants documented the type, quantity, and weight of all materials collected. In total, 838 individual waste items were recorded, with a combined weight of approximately 44.8 kg (98.75 lb).
The results clearly show that plastics remain the main waste concern at Conaree Beach. Plastic items linked to consumer products accounted for 470 items, 56.1% of all items collected, including 166 sweet drink bottles, 109 water bottles, and 131 bottle caps. Other commonly recorded items included smooth Styrofoam fragments, unidentified plastic fragments, thick ropes, plastic wrappers and packaging, whole glass bottles, and fishing lines.
Field observations and photo documentation showed waste accumulating along coastal vegetation, the shore, and beach structures, where wind, waves, and built features can trap debris. This indicates that Conaree Beach is affected by a combination of land-based consumer waste, coastal recreational activity, and fishing-related materials. These findings, alongside the full dataset collected, will also support future hotspot identification, targeted cleanups, public education, and practical prevention measures – including improved waste disposal options and source reduction efforts.
PROMAR extends its appreciation to all participants and partners who contributed to the activity. Their efforts demonstrate the importance of continued community action in protecting the coastal and marine environment of St. Kitts and Nevis!
