In May 2026, the PROMAR Team in Trinidad & Tobago took its marine conservation message directly into the classroom, conducting outreach sessions across five primary schools over three days and reaching a total of 118 students. The sessions set out to raise awareness about marine pollution and the damaging effects of plastic waste on ocean ecosystems, providing young learners with the knowledge and motivation to become active stewards of their marine environment.

Each session combined educational presentations with video content to explore the sources and consequences of marine litter, with a particular focus on single-use plastics and their impact on coastal ecosystems and marine life. The sessions invited students to engage directly with the material, discussing how everyday choices and habits can either protect or harm the ocean. Students also participated in quizzes, offering an enjoyable way to consolidate what they had learnt and reflect on their own role in addressing plastic pollution.

Schools received a range of PROMAR-branded materials – including bags, water bottles, copy books, notebooks and pens, alongside PROMAR brochures and informational packages from the Institute of Marine Affairs, PROMAR's partner in Trinidad & Tobago. Students themselves received copy books, pens and Lionfish Activity Books as a token of appreciation for their enthusiasm and participation throughout the program.

The sessions concluded with the launch of the Poster and Craft Competition, 'Small Actions – Big Impact. Protect our Sea from Plastic Pollution.' The competition invites students to express what they have learnt about plastics and to showcase a concrete positive action that helps protect our oceans and waterways.

Looking ahead, PROMAR will extend its outreach to secondary schools in June 2026, continuing to build a generation of ocean-literate young people ready to make a difference!
