From 30 July to 1 August 2026, the Green Heritage Fund Suriname took part in the annual Torarica Green Awareness Expo, held in the Ballroom of the Royal Torarica in Suriname. Organized by the Torarica Group, the expo is an educational event aimed at raising awareness of sustainability among staff, guests, and visitors, with this year's theme, "United for a Greener Future," reflecting a shared commitment to environmental responsibility across sectors.
The expo brought together a broad audience, including invited schools, local partners, and Surinamese companies, all given the opportunity to present products and services that contribute to a healthy and sustainable working and living environment through interactive, hands-on engagement. Within this space, the Green Heritage Fund Suriname focused on the PROMAR (Prevention of Marine Litter in the Caribbean Sea) Project and Climate Action, highlighting the important link between plastic production, plastic pollution, and climate change.
To bring these themes to life, the PROMAR booth featured interactive activities tailored to different age groups. Children had the opportunity to test their knowledge of waste separation through an engaging game, while adults were invited to take part in a plastic and climate change quiz exploring the connections between plastic pollution, climate change, and everyday consumer choices. Visitors were also able to learn more about the PROMAR Project itself, with access to informational materials and reports produced under the project, offering deeper insight into ongoing efforts to prevent marine litter across Suriname and the wider Caribbean region.
Over the course of the three-day expo, the PROMAR booth attracted strong public interest, with 463 people visiting the booth and 259 participating in the interactive quiz. This high level of engagement reflects growing public interest in sustainability, plastic pollution prevention, and climate action among both younger and older audiences in Suriname.
By participating in community-focused events like the Torarica Green Awareness Expo, PROMAR Suriname continues to strengthen public understanding of the connection between plastic pollution and climate change, while promoting practical solutions such as responsible waste separation and reduced reliance on single-use plastics. Events like this play a vital role in advancing PROMAR's broader mission of preventing marine litter, encouraging behavioral change, and building a more environmentally conscious community across Suriname and the Caribbean.
