On Saturday, 5 September 2026, the Institute of Marine Affairs (IMA), under the Prevention of Marine Litter in the Caribbean Sea (PROMAR) Project, took part in the Ministry of Planning, Economic Affairs and Development (MPEAD) Hive Five Spellbound Caravan at Gulf City Mall, San Fernando. Hosted by Guardian Media Limited (GML), the event brought together representatives from The Caribbean Industrial Research Institute (CARIRI), the Environmental Management Authority (EMA), and the Central Statistical Office (CSO) for a day of engaging activities, challenges, and community outreach.

 

The event provided a valuable opportunity to connect with children, parents, and members of the public while raising awareness of ongoing initiatives under the PROMAR Project aimed at reducing single-use plastics and preventing marine litter across Trinidad and Tobago. In total, the IMA team, successfully engaged 237 people throughout the day, reflecting strong public interest in marine conservation and plastic pollution prevention.

 

The IMA team brought environmental advocacy to life through a range of fun, interactive, and educational activities designed to engage visitors of all ages. Attendees tested their knowledge with trivia on marine pollution, ocean life, biodiversity, and other marine-related topics, while others challenged themselves to complete a 24-piece puzzle in under two and a half minutes. Beyond the games, visitors took part in meaningful discussions about the harmful impacts of single-use plastics, learning practical ways to help address this growing issue in Trinidad and Tobago, while exploring the importance of transitioning toward a more circular economy. Tokens of appreciation were presented to everyone who participated.

 

These activities generated enthusiastic participation throughout the event, creating meaningful opportunities for the IMA team to engage directly with the public and share the core mission of the PROMAR Project in combating marine litter.

 

By taking part in community-focused events like the Hive Five Spellbound Caravan, PROMAR Trinidad and Tobago continues to expand its public outreach, using interactive and accessible activities to raise awareness of marine litter prevention and inspire practical, everyday actions that support a cleaner, more sustainable environment for the country's coastal and marine ecosystems.
