Beach Cleanup Removes 531 Waste Items from Sandy Bay in St. Kitts
On 30 May 2026, our PROMAR team in St. Kitts and Nevis joined forces with the NGO Blue Conscience for a beach cleanup and solid waste data collection exercise at Sandy Bay, Parsons Ground. The activity brought together 16 participants, with PROMAR supporting it through marine litter monitoring and waste documentation.
Participants collected litter from the beach, coastal vegetation, rocky areas, and seaweed deposits where waste had accumulated. The material was then sorted, counted, and weighed using the PROMAR beach solid waste data collection tool. A total of 531 individual waste items were documented, with a recorded weight of approximately 81 pounds. Plastic was the main category recorded at the site: items associated with consumer products accounted for 393 items, or approximately 74% of all items collected, with plastic water bottles, bottle caps, and soft-drink bottles among the most frequently recorded.
Field observations indicated that waste was concentrated along the vegetation line, the beach edge, and near the rocky sections of the coast, where waves deposit seaweed and can trap debris. The cleanup removed a significant quantity of litter from Sandy Bay, reducing immediate risks to coastal habitats, marine life, and beach users. The data collected will also support future monitoring, hotspot identification, public education, and targeted action to reduce marine litter at the community level.
PROMAR commends Blue Conscience, CFBC volunteers, and all participants for their contribution. Their involvement reflects the important role of sustained community participation in safeguarding the coastal and marine environments of St. Kitts.
