New Waste Management System at Long Bay Beach, Beef Island, BVI

Content

On 20 January 2026, a new waste management system was deployed at the demonstration site: Long Bay Beach, Beef Island, BVI. This initiative is the result of a collaborative effort between Green VI, the Ministry for Environment, Natural Resources and Climate Change (MENRCC), and the Department of Waste Management, marking a significant step forward in both the PROMAR project and the broader Beach Management Plan implementation.

In total, ten sets of three bins (Plastic, Aluminium and Waste) were placed along the length of the demonstration site, along with picnic tables under areas of shade. All bins and picnic tables are made with Polywood, a recycled plastic turned into wood by local company VI Plastics.

The waste management system will remain in a trial phase during the first three months of 2026. During this period, the project team will:

  • Monitor how beachgoers respond to and interact with the bin system
  • Optimize bin placement across the site
  • Organize public awareness activities
  • Install informative signs on how to recycle and what should go in each bin
