Guyana-PROMAR Tackles Ocean Plastic with New Floating Litter Trap at Good Hope

Content

In a significant boost to marine litter mitigation, the PROMAR Project has installed a new in-stream floating aluminium litter trap at the Good Hope Pump Station on Guyana’s East Coast Demerara. The trap, sourced through collaborations with Ocean Observers and donated by the Caribbean Youth Environment Network (CYEN), a key UG-PROMAR partner, marks a strategic upgrade to the project’s waste interception efforts.

Unlike earlier locally built models, this durable, purpose-designed trap enhances efficiency in capturing floating debris, preventing tonnes of plastic and waste from entering the Atlantic Ocean each month. The installation reinforces PROMAR’s dual mission: immediate environmental action and robust data collection to inform national waste policy.

Community members have welcomed the addition, noting its visibility and effectiveness. “I am glad to see all these efforts being made, we have been having this problem a long time,” said a local resident. Through collaboration, innovation, and community engagement, Guyana-PROMAR continues to demonstrate that small-scale interventions can drive large-scale change in the fight against marine pollution.
