More than 321 kg of litter collected in March in BVI
March 2026 was a busy and impactful month for PROMAR and Green VI, with three community clean-up events taking place across the British Virgin Islands.
On 14th March, 65 volunteers, including Hon. Luce Hodge-Smith, Junior Minister of Culture and Tourism, partnered with the BVI Filipino Association to clean the Road Town waterfront, stretching from Queen Elizabeth II Park to Crafts Alive Village. This high-traffic area, home to the main ferry terminal, serves as many visitors' first impression of the BVI. Over 198 kg of mixed waste, glass, plastics, and aluminum were collected on the day.
On 22nd March, 53 participants from the 8th District Office and the East End Pathfinder Club gathered in the Trellis Bay area, removing nearly 96 kg of recyclables and general waste from the shoreline near Loose Mongoose and surrounding beaches.
On 27th March, a team of 12 volunteers made the journey to Loblolly Beach, Anegada, the BVI's northernmost island, where 27.8 kg of marine debris were collected, with a majority of plastic. Due to its geographic location, Anegada regularly accumulates floating debris carried in by Atlantic ocean currents, making clean-up efforts there especially critical.
Together, these three events demonstrate the power of community action in the fight against marine litter in BVI!
